“When we say goodbye the circle of miracles remains, our hearts and minds woven together in a netting for safe landings and a way to bounce back from a fall into unknown dark corners, surprising memories of lightness and laughter walking this tightrope of life we sisters, lovers of the muse in one another.” Laura
Women-Only Spaces
"For many women it is important to spend time regularly in women-only settings. When we gather together as women, we each hold a piece of the whole story. Together we heal faster than we would if we remained isolated or separate, and group members hold up a mirror for us to see ourselves more clearly.” Christianne Northrup MD Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom
There is an enlivening of energies that happens only in tribe. In our society women are often culled from the herd; fenced into isolated lives, habituated, burned, shamed, or busied out of authentic gathering with their own kind. Being together in women-only space can restore a sorely missing magic in ourselves and in our world. As our energies connect and begin to weave and flow together we are made stronger in ourselves, in the uniqueness of ourselves.
The health benefits of women-only gatherings are now well documented. One example: In a 1998 UCLA study researchers concluded that not having close friends or confidantes was as detrimental to women’s health as smoking or carrying extra weight.
In my experience being in a women-only space is essential to my well-being. I have been and continue to be gifted by the women-only writing group; gifted with life energy, creative opening, acceptance and love of self and others, strength, happiness, clarity, education, and inspiration. I am grateful for these energies that simply can’t be had elsewhere.
“We are sharing ourselves, our precious time, our secrets, our stories, the sacred, the profane, the everyday irritations, hates, and confusions, as well as the lovely upper reaches of our beings and always, always the best, the reality of who we are — exactly us. Or exceptionally us. Or blatheringly us. No one better than the other. No one less than or more than.” Carol
Gathering To Write
“When we gather in a sacred circle we create a temenos, which means sanctuary in Greek. In a women’s circle every woman in the circle is herself and an aspect of every other woman there as well. . There is no vertical hierarchy . . . It is a safe place to tell the truth of our own feelings perceptions and experiences.” Jean Bolen, Crossing To Avalon
A women-only writing group has it’s own unique gifts to offer each person while bringing all into deeper creative expression. In the energy of just the right group we can churn like milk into butter or cream, solidifying our gifts and rising to the top of our game.
Balance with ourselves and each other can be restored in supportive communal waters. The too bold soften, the too shy bolden, the unspeaking sing, and the opera singer finally reaches that high note, shattering the glass. The right group can support each member coming into their unique, personal power.
The writing group can give us the permission, space, time, and skills to shine as the creative writer/artist/human that we are. It can validate, encourage, and develop the richest, truest parts of us. It can uncork our original voices and talents and can connect us in community.
Writing in the group goes beyond practice and production. It becomes a full out sacred act as we connect with the seasons within ourselves and in others. The creative writing group is part vision quest and champagne celebration; a journey of self-discovery and skills training, a stomping out of ancient rhythms and a clinking toast of crystal glasses.
As we claim our voices and share our true stories we become lively with inner knowing. We grow in trust in the shared power of creating and listening. The stories here, not cut or buttered up for publication or acceptance, contain the ancient storytelling magic - to heal, to inform, to enlighten.
